Why do we call him a monster? Because he was just that. George W. Bush is also a monster. Indeed, ALL presidents...no exceptions...have been monsters for at least the duration of their tenure in the "highest office" in the land. It is definitely part of the job description for the titular leader of the ruling class.
All presidents...or monarchs...or prime ministers...or whatever the chief-cook-and-bottle-washer is called...must make decisions that adversely impact "innocent" people...as in blowing them to bits. In order to shelter us from this harsh reality, the powers-that-be and their media handmaidens routinely tell us how very much worse they COULD be. For, after all, didn't Saddam Hussein use nerve gas on "his own people?" The fact that Dick Cheney, under the direction of President Reagan, gave him that very weapon to use against our common Iranian "enemy," is conveniently overlooked. We also like to forget that al Quaida...the current main boogieman justifying whatever the U.S. military chooses to do...was also created by OUR government, to counter our Soviet "enemies" in Afghanistan.
We rarely see pictures of the "collateral damage" inflicted by our armed forces as we do battle with our many enemies, although our leaders, their subordinates and the men who actually drop the bombs or fire the missiles, know IN ADVANCE approximately how many "innocent" women and children will be killed or maimed for life by the attack.
So it goes, we are told. So it has always been.
It is "common knowledge" that we MUST accept this deplorable reality, for there really are no alternatives. "Bad people" (evil doers) will always, out of envy or simple greed for power, mount attacks against us from afar. Our only option is to regretfully respond in kind.
So, what can we do differently? Certainly we are not calling for a violent revolution to install more peaceful rulers. That would be just more of the same old same-old. But we do have a peaceful weapon of mass distraction...the Internet. We, ALL the people in the world, have at our very fingertips the solution to this endless insanity.
Like the legendary child who saw that the emporer has no clothes, we must continually remind ourselves and others that NO EMPORER has any clothes. War is simply waged because our rulers are too impatient, too entranced with their ability to send men and women off to kill and die rather than doing things the hard way. We...the people of the world in all our vast numbers...must step into the breach and begin to insist that they do it no more. Whether we are Americans or Russians or French or Iraqis, we have to get together peacefully and put a stop to war.
We know, this is easier said than done. But, for all our sakes, for the sake of our descendants, we must do it.
