The Election from Hell! --- Part Deux

November 20, 2000

It's time to get serious. Like the TV comics, we are simply being upstaged...humorously speaking...by actual events. It is too difficult to come up with gag lines...other than those that make one gag and retch...which have not already been reported seriously on CNN.

What we would like to talk about today is rhetoric...or should we simply call it bullshit? For that is what it is:

"The will of the people" --- Translation: The people obviously want my guy to win.

"The rule of law" --- Translation: If we pick the right laws, my guy will win.

"A full and fair count" --- Translation: Count those votes for my guy, ignore the rest.

"The sanctity of the ballot" --- Translation: Votes cast for my guy are sacred.

"Democracy in action" --- Translation: A democratic result would obviously have my guy win.

Sunday on CNN, Demidupe Senator Bob Kerry, a genuine war hero, when confronted with the issue of why such a large proportion (one third overall...almost 90% in some democratic counties) of absentee military ballots were rejected on "technical" issues (lack of a postmark, illegible signature, etc.)...he repeatedly said that this is why we have courts and laws. When Bob Woodward...of Watergate fame...pointed out that if you were on the way to the hospital with your wife about to deliver a child, you broke the speed laws and were pulled over by a policeman, he would probably give you a pass, Kerry had the audacity to REPEAT that "this is why we have laws and courts." That is, if the cop DID give you a ticket...instead of escorting you to the hospital with sirens blazing...you have the recourse of taking the ticket to court and disputing it!

Huh?

Are we starting to get the message? As a football coach famously observed, "Winning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing!" In politics, as in sports, this maxim rings true. So we can't really blame the Pooblioob and Demidupe operatives for their current actions and "explanations" thereof. After all, thousands of jobs for them and their buddies are at stake. Billions of dollars of vigorish will be available to spread thickly among the winners. So, we suppose they are just doing their jobs. Somehow, however, we can't forgive Senator Kerry for his head-up-the-ass response to Woodward's question. Perhaps he has forgotten just what it is like to be put in the position of possibly losing your life for your country...as many sailors recently actually did on the Cole...and then being told by a smart-ass politician to "take it to court" when your vote isn't honored!

Do they, the politicians, have to treat us, the people, like idiots? Do they have to keep cloaking themselves in the language of freedom and democracy while playing their games? At least in athletic events, NOBODY...not the coaches nor the trainers nor the fans nor the commentators...EVER questions the goal of the event. Why must we be subject to these endless appeals to truth, decency and honor when none of these noble sentiments have any place whatsoever in the contest of dueling lawyers.

Foreign observers, little reported in the U.S. media, are having a field day with this fiasco. Both Fidel Castro and the Mexican government have offered to send election observers to the United States to ensure a fair outcome! Europeans, especially the holier-than-thou French, are puffing and sniffing and holding their noses as they raise the obvious issue of what is happening to the much praised...at least by Americans...U.S. democracy.

So what is happening with U.S. democracy? As we often point out on these pages, there is no such thing as U.S. democracy and there never has been. Although many of our founders envisioned a day when the people of our country would actually have a voice in how they were governed, an equal number distrusted those same people...consisting in those days, by the way, only of land owning white males...so thoroughly as to impose upon us a House of Lords...the U.S. Senate...and an Electoral College to stand between us and those who would rule us. The current electoral disaster was presaged by a concerted effort by the ruling class to exclude all who would question the laughable "two party system" by thrusting upon us a pair of hereditary nobles backed by THREE BILLION dollars of corporate money to make certain that the airwaves would be cluttered with meaningless "two party" gibberish drowning out the voices of...guess who?...the same people they pretend to serve.

Has it worked? Well, we are now riveted to our TV screens waiting to see which of the nobility is to be coronated with the crown of U.S. President...leader of the "free world"..."the most powerful man on the planet"...the role model for our children of bumbling, blow jobs and baloney. We would have to say, yes, it has worked.

But wait. There IS another force with which to be reckoned. You are looking at it. No, we don't mean OUR words, although we certainly stand behind them. We are talking about ALL the words from ALL those, like us, who have discovered this medium. This is a place where ANYBODY, ANY WHERE in the world, can say exactly what he or she wants to say. This chorus of the people, by the people and for the people has just begun to sing. And whatever else is said in our songs, one thread winds its way through every melody...

Freedom

Whether you are singing about love, or growling about hate, praising your mother or slinging mud at politicians, you can put it into words that YOU have chosen, for which YOU are responsible. For better or worse, what you see is what you get.

One of these weeks, when the election from hell is over and the new monarch has been elevated to the throne, we will continue our commentary on the details of discarding the dominatrixes of duplicitous democracy and bringing freedom to America and the rest of the world. We hope you continue to tune in.

Talk to you later...
