The F1 and F2 Keys Explained

This illustration shows the board before you have invoked any functions.

This is how the board looks after you have clicked on the function key F1 on the keyboard...OR...you have clicked on the icon on the Sudoku board at the far right. Note that the 6 square in the fifth row of the first column is lit because both rows above it contain sixes and the third column does as well. Thus, it is the only square in its box which can contain a six.

If, instead of F1, you invoke the F2 function, the board will look as shown on the left. Without the other squares being lit, it is easier to see why the 6 square is lit. Notice that F1 and F2 can not both be in play at the same time. For example, if you hit F2 while F1 is lit, F2 will replace F1....and vice versa.

As explained in the main instruction page, after you have used F1 or F2 for a while, you will be able to quickly locate such singletons without any assistance. However, you can still invoke these functions to see if you have missed any, or after you have placed numbers elsewhere that were not singletons, but may have produced some more of them by elimination.

If you hit F2 repeatedly...without filling anything in...every other time you hit it, a different red square will appear until you have visited every possible singleton on the board...at the moment...then return to the first one you saw. By the way, after you fill in any of them, there may be more the next time around.
